A Reel or TikTok for a small business doesn't need a production budget. It needs to be vertical, short, have something in the first second or two that stops the scroll, and give people a clear reason to get in touch. Short video is shown to people who don't follow you yet, which makes it the cheapest discovery channel a small business has.

The hard part isn't filming, it's knowing what to film next week. So here are 30 video ideas in three groups: behind the scenes, demos and before and after, and trust builders. After them you'll find hooks, current lengths and sizes from the official pages, music rules for business accounts, phone filming tips, and how to turn each video into an ad and a landing page asset.

10 behind-the-scenes Reels ideas

These answer the "how is it made?" curiosity and show real people behind the business.

  1. Opening up. 15 seconds from unlocking the door to the first customer. Works for a café, a bakery, a shop.
  2. One order, start to finish. Packing a shipment, plating a dish, assembling a product.
  3. The tool you can't work without. "I don't leave the van without this", from an electrician, a groomer or an HVAC tech.
  4. A mistake you made and what you learned. Human, sometimes funny, and it builds trust.
  5. A workday in 30 seconds. Quick cuts through the day with a caption for each step.
  6. Meet the team. One person, one question: "What don't customers know about your job?"
  7. New stock arriving. Opening the box, a peek at what lands in the shop this week.
  8. Getting ready for the season. Before back to school, before summer, before the holiday rush. The key 2027 dates are in our social media content calendar.
  9. After the customer leaves. Cleaning, sterilizing, resetting. Shows your standards without saying "we're meticulous".
  10. Where it comes from. The farm, the roaster, the joiner, the print shop. A short story about the source.

10 demo and before-and-after ideas

These are the closest to a sale, because they show the result.

  1. Full before and after. Carpet cleaning, a bathroom refit, a haircut, a garden. Flash the "after" for a second, then go back to the start.
  2. How to use it properly. "Most people do this the wrong way round", then the right way.
  3. One product, three ways. For shops: the same item styled three ways.
  4. Stress test. Drop it, spill on it, pull it. Only if the product genuinely survives.
  5. Fair comparison. "What's the difference between the cheap option and the expensive one?", without naming competitors.
  6. A 15-second tip. One professional tip viewers can use today.
  7. The process in steps. "What happens at your first appointment with us", for clinics, consultants and studios.
  8. An unusual request. How you solved a customer's odd request, with their permission.
  9. Satisfying work sounds. Cutting, sanding, wrapping, with original sound and no music.
  10. The result over time. "This is what it looks like a year later", for remodels, furniture and landscaping.

10 Reels and TikTok ideas that build trust

People buy from people they trust. These videos answer objections before anyone voices them.

  1. The most common question you get. A 20-second answer. Every question is a video.
  2. A myth in your field. "No, you don't need to replace all the pipes", plus a short explanation.
  3. What it costs and why. A real price range and what drives it. Few businesses do this, so it stands out.
  4. What you don't do. "We don't fix X, so we recommend...". Shows honesty.
  5. A real customer talking. A short clip from a happy customer, with consent. How to ask, and the line between real customers and AI actors, is covered in AI UGC ads.
  6. A real Google review on screen. Read it aloud and add one sentence of your own.
  7. "What I'd do in your place." Honest advice that doesn't necessarily lead to an immediate sale.
  8. Answering a comment. Pick a comment from a previous video and reply with a new video. TikTok has a built-in reply-with-video option.
  9. Your experience, plainly. Not a certificate on the wall, but "why this matters to you as a customer".
  10. What happens if something goes wrong. Warranty, returns, fixes. Reassures people who are on the fence.

Hooks: the first two seconds

Whatever the idea, the opening decides whether anyone sees the rest. Hooks that work for small businesses:

Hook typeExample
Start with the resultThe finished kitchen, then "Here's how it looked three weeks ago"
A question the viewer is asking"Do you really need to service your boiler every year?"
A mistake"Stop doing this to your leather sofa"
A number"Three things I check before every haircut"
MovementHands already working, not a person saying "Hi guys"

Never open with a logo or a slow intro. Put the hook as on-screen text too, because many people watch with the sound off.

Reels, TikTok and Shorts: lengths and sizes

The rule: film vertical at 9:16, export at 1080x1920 or higher, and one file serves every platform. Checked against the official pages on November 2, 2026:

PlatformRatioLengthWatch out for
Instagram Reels (organic)9:16Up to 3 minutes since January 2025 (Engadget)Cover image shows in the grid cropped to 3:4
Reels ad (Meta)9:16, 1440x2560 recommendedUp to 15 minutes, up to 4GBKeep 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% sides free of text (Meta Ads Guide)
TikTok In-Feed ad9:16, at least 540x960Up to 10 minutes, up to 500MBNo links, @ mentions or hashtags in ad text (TikTok Ads Help)
YouTube ShortsSquare or verticalUp to 3 minutesSquare or vertical videos up to 3 minutes count as Shorts (YouTube Help)

TikTok allows much longer organic uploads than a minute, but the exact limit varies by account, so check it in the app. Either way, the allowed length isn't the recommended length. All other sizes, for posts, carousels and covers, are in our social media image and video sizes cheat sheet.

Music: what business accounts can use

Trending songs are tempting, but a business promoting itself is using music commercially. TikTok's support page on commercial use of music recommends that businesses use only tracks from its Commercial Music Library in promotional content, because licenses for the general library don't cover commercial use. On a business account, that library is what you see when you tap "Add sound". On Instagram, some business accounts see a reduced music library for the same reason.

The safe choices: your own voice (original sound), the work's natural sound, the Commercial Music Library, or a track you've licensed for commercial use.

Filming Reels on your phone

Light. Face the window, never stand with your back to it. In the evening, a simple ring light is enough.

Sound. A wireless clip-on mic for your phone is the best value purchase. Air conditioning hum or street noise makes people scroll faster than a slightly soft image does.

Framing. Phone vertical, at eye level, on a tripod. Leave room at the top and bottom where the account name, caption and buttons will sit.

Captions. Many people watch without sound. Add captions, and always proofread auto-generated ones, especially names, prices and technical terms.

Batch filming. Block two hours a week to film four to six videos in one go, then schedule them for the following week.

If you have no time to film at all, some of the ideas above (common questions, myths, price explainers) can be produced with an AI presenter or built from photos. What works, and the labeling rules, are in our guide to AI video ads for small business.

When to post

Forget the "best time to post Reels" lists. They're based on other people's audiences, not your customers. Instead:

  • Open Instagram insights and TikTok analytics and check which days and hours your followers are active.
  • Remember your customers' week: a café's audience behaves differently on a Saturday morning than a B2B accountant's.
  • Post the same type of video at two different times over a few weeks and compare.
  • Consistency matters more than timing. Two videos a week for six months beats one a day for two weeks.

Reuse: from one Reel to an ad, a page and a reply

Every good video should work for you more than once:

  1. Organic Reels and TikTok. The same file on both, plus Shorts if you have a channel.
  2. An ad. After a week, pick the video with the most views, saves and comments and run it as an ad on a small budget with a clear call to action. Make two alternative openings and test which one works.
  3. A landing page. A demo or a customer story next to the contact button. What else the page needs is in landing pages for small business.
  4. Direct replies. Send it to customers who asked exactly the question it answers, or save it as a quick reply. A 20-second video sometimes replaces five messages of explanation.
